Fetal period
9th week to birth
Maturation of tissues and organs + rapid growth of body
Length of pregnancy is considered to be 280 days, or 40 weeks after onset of LNMP, or 266 days/ 38 weeks after fertilization
Monthly changes
Slowdown in growth of the head
Beginning of 3rd month ➜ Head: 1/2 of the CRL
Beginning 5th month ➜ Head: 1/3 of CHL
At birth ➜ Head: 1/4 CHL
Third month
Eyes move to ventral aspect of the face
Ears lie close to the definitive position
Limbs reach the length
12 weeks
Primary ossification centers
External genitalia develop
4th and 5th month
CRL = 15 cm
Mvt of fetus can be felt by the mother (5th)
Birth
Within 10-14 days of the calculated delivery date
Earlier = premature
Later = Postmature
Age of embryo = ultrasound
CRL = 7th to 14th weeks
