Tone Placement
dấu (sign of the tone) placed over a vowel
Rule 1 - place the tone mark over the vowel with a diacritic ă â ê ô ơ ư
Rule 2 - first vowel closest to the center of the rhyme Ex1. xoai ( x + oai) a is the centre of the rhyme: xoài Ex 2: Hoa (H+oa) the centre is the space between o and a, so use the first vowel: Hòa. Ex 3: oan (no onset) a is the centre: oán
Rule 3 - for 'iê, ươ, uô, ia, yê, ưa, ua' you always put the tone over the second vowel
Rule 4 - When another vowel follows after 'o', the tone is over that vowel Ex: hoà (tone over 'a') khoẻ (tone over 'e') (changed automatically by typing software to the o)
ia / ya
(eeeeaa) iê, yê
ỉa (x1) (diarrhea)
