THE CONCEPT OF TECHNOLOGY AND MEDIA IN TEACHING AND LEARNING
DEFINITION
Technology
Technology refers to tools and machines that may be used to solve real-world problems
The current state of humanity’s knowledge of how to combine resources to produce desired products, to solve problems, fulfill needs, or satisfy wants
Media
An interpretation of reality, and again usually involves some form of human intervention, such as writing (for text), drawing or design for graphics, talking, scripting or recording for audio and video
The word ‘medium’ comes from the Latin, meaning in the middle (a median) and also that which intermediates or interprets
Introduce classroom to many opportunities
This is one of the greatest ways technology has changed education
Video clips, educational games, and virtual simulations are just a few examples of technology resources you can use to engage and educate in the classroom.
Using tech in class can prepare students to successfully enter the workforce after graduation
Always prioritize active digital screen time over passive
Active screen time, like playing an educational game or learning a new digital skill, engages a student’s mind or body in a way that involves more than observation
Passive screen time, like watching a video or listening to an online lecture involves limited interaction or engagement with the technology.
Active digital activities are more likely to help your students experience new concepts, and they encourage your class to work together during the lesson
Technology and media provides many advantages
Media offers both cognitive and affective experiences.
It can provoke discussion, an assessment of one's values, and an assessment of self if the scenes have strong emotional content.
Many media sources have very high production quality capable of showcasing complex ideas in a short period of time.
This helps develop quantitative reasoning
The use of media sources help connect learners with events that are culturally relevant.
As a result, a positive consequence of utilizing media is that instructors must keep their materials and examples up-to-date.
ews stories can be used to connect theories taught in the classroom with real world events and policies.
