Causes
Treaty of Versailles
WW1 officially ended with signing the treaty of Versailles on June 18, 1919. The allied powers concluded a series of peace negotiations with little participation by Germany.
4 main terms
Blame- Germany had to take the blame for starting the war
Reparations- Pay back 6.6 billion pounds (400 billion usd today) to the Entente
Army- reduced to 100,000 men, 6 battleships, no airforce
Territory- lost coal to France for 15 years, land given to Poland, lost colonies (10% of all land)

Great Depression
The cause of the Great Depression was due to desperation for food and work, people often gave their support to extreme political parties which promised to help them if elected to power.
effects:
- Industrial worker- wages down
- Young people- 50% unemployment, support base of Nazis
- Business owners failing
- Farmers in debt

Appeasement
Hitler
- Nowdays people criticise Chamberlain for appeasing Hitler
- At the time most people thoroughly agreed with Chamberlain + praised him’
Appeasement means giving in to someone provided their demands are seen as reasonable. During 1930’s many politicians in Britain + France believed the terms of the ToV placed harsh restrictions on Germany seen as unfair.

Rise of Hitler
- Hitler was a Lance corporal in WW1
- He loved being a part of the army and when German lost WW1, he cried
Due to the Great Depression, voters sought extreme solutions from extreme parties. Support grew for Nazis and Communist Party.
Hitler’s ideas included inequality amongst races, nations and individuals. According to Hitler the mankind the Volk (the people) of which the German people was the greatest.

Invasion of France
Germany brought war to Eastern Europe on May 10, 1940 with the goal to conquer France. German bombers hit air bases in France, Luxembourg, Belgium + Netherlands, destroying numbers of Allied planes.

Battle of Britain
Germany began bombing London, planned to invade Britain (June 1940). Air battles and bombing between the Luftwaffe vs Royal Air Force.
Dunkirk
Evacuation
Operation Dynamo only able to evacuate about 7,500 men from Dunkirk; around 10,000 got out the next day.

Many men were away serving in the military, and so women moved into the workforce. By the time the war ended, men demanded their jobs back. Despite this the war provided economics + social opportunities for women.
US- Australian Alliance
1941, PM John Curtin called on the US to come to Australia’s aid, offered the country a Pacific base to push back the Japanese.
The US has exerted a significant influence over Australian life; exposed Australians to American goods, movies + music, made an impact on Australian society + culture.

The atomic bomb ‘fat man’ dropped on August 9, 1945. 40,000 killed instantly

Roots of Holocaust came from social Darwinism which is the in nature, the strongest will adapt to survive.
