Assessments
Formative
Definition: Makes use of ongoing assessments to find the students strengths and needs which therefore affects instruction by touching upon said students strengths and build upon it while also taking heed of their needs as well.
Entry/Exit Slips: Students have to write and answer a prompt or question depending on what was learned in the lesson of the day or what they might know already prior to a lesson.
Quizzes: Students will take in an in class quiz or short questionnaire based on what was learned to test the students current knowledge on the concept in question.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: These are the types of assessments that given during a specific period of time, such as per quarter or during a students progress in order to determine how the student is progressing thus far in their learning.
Placement Tests: Students may get tested in order to possibility determine some kind of eligibility possibly towards transitioning into a general classroom from a bilingual classroom for example.
Word Tier Lists: There may be at times when a student needs to know certain words in according to their grade level so testing them periodically is also an example of a benchmark.
Performance
Definition: Is a type of assessment which tests a student mainly in the moment and is used to assess what they can do with the knowledge they have acquired.
Building Circuits/Cycles: Students can build electrical circuits or energy cycles through various programs to test their knowledge on different concepts.
Story Plot Elements Map: Students label and identify everything about a story from characters, setting, conflict, rising action etc. on a map of their own to determine if the student can identify said elements.
Summative
Definition: These are assessments which are given towards the end of a whole unit or typically end of a semester or school year such as state testing purposes.
State Testing: Every state does a statewide test in different academic subjects to test a students knowledge overall as they have progressed through the year which is given once per school year.
Unit Exam: These exams are usually done when a lesson over a certain subject is completed in its entirety and ready to move on to the next subject.
Diagnostic
Definition: These are used to assess a students current knowledge over a certain subject or concept such as reading level or sounds.
Running Records: These diagnostic assessments are used to determine a students reading level by having the student read a short passage.
Spelling Inventories: These are mainly used in order to determine a students phonics struggles in order to better determine where more help may be needed by reading off a certain word list.
