Establishment of the Delhi Sultanate
Tughlaq Dynasty (1320 - 1414 CE)
Timur's invasion in 1398 CE hastened the decline of the Sultanate
He was followed by his son Muhammad bin Tughlaq, one of the most striking and controversial figures of the time.
Scholarly, had visionary ideas
Most of his projects were failures causing misery to the economy of the state and the people themselves
Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq founded the Tughlaq Dynasty
He was followed by his cousin Firoz Shah, after which a struggle for power ensued.
Sayyids and Lodis (1414 - 1526 CE)
They ruled until Bahlol Lodi, founder of the Lodi dynasty, took over.
In 1414 CE, Khizir Khan, Timur's Viceroy in India set up the Sayyid dynasty
For three years after Timur's invasion, Delhi did not have a king
With the defeat of Ibrahim Lodi, following his death in the Battle of Panipat with Babur, the Sultanate came to an end.
Slave Dynasty (1206-1290 CE)
Many of the kings were originally slaves
Eventually, these rulers were overthrown by the Khiljis.
Razia, his daughter, succeeded him
Aibak inherited Delhi, Ajmer and Kanauj from Ghori and extended the empire further
He was succeeded by his son-in-law Iltutmish, a great builder.
Balban succeeded Razia; going on to become one of the greatest Sultans of the dynasty. His death was followed by incompetent rulers assuming power.
Qutbuddin Aibak, founder of the Mamluk Dynasty, was a slave of Muhammad Ghori who rose to the position of general
Khilji Dynasty (1290 - 1320 CE)
Jalaluddin made his beloved nephew Alauddin the governer of Allahabad. Alauddin treacherously killed his uncle and declared himself the Sultan.
He successfully checked Mongol invasions and began to extend his kingdom.
His general Malik Kafur led successful military expeditions and expanded the empire.
Jalaluddin Firoz Khilji, a non-Turkish noble and Balban's military commander, set up the Khilji dynasty.
Alauddin introduced reforms to keep check on the power of the nobility and fraudulent practices
Introduced system of descriptive roll - chehra
Branding of horses - dagh
Banned drinking, intermixing and marriage between noble families
Established fixed prices for all essential commodities

DELHI
Delhi was first the capital of Tomara rajputs
The Tomara Rajputs were then defeated by the
Chahmanas in the mid 12th century.
Under the Tomara Rajputs and the Chauhans, Delhi became a commercial centre and, the currency used there was Delhiwal.
The Delhi sultanate was founded by Muhammud Ghori.
Delhi Sultanate
Qutbuddin Aybak was the first slave king
Qutbuddin Aybak and Iltutmish built the Qutb minar
In 1236 Sultan Iltutmish's daughter Raziyya became the sultan of Delhi. The chronicler that time --> Minhaj-i-Siraj recognised that Raziyya was more than capable to rule than her brothers. But he was not comfortable to have a queen as a ruler, so Raziyya was removed from the throne in 1240.

Various Histories were made in Persian called Tarikh and Tawarikh(Plural).
The authors of the Tawarikh lived in cities and rarely in villages.
They often wrote histories about sultans hoping to get a reward in return.
They advised rulers on the need of preserving an ideal social order based on
birthright
and
gender distinctions
these ideas were not shared with everybody. :european_castle:
Garrison towns - A fortified settlement with soldiers
Hinterland - The lands adjacent to a city or a port that supply it with goods and services.
