Role of Schools
1820-1840: uniting students by having them share common moral and political values (Spring, 2018, p.5).
1800s-now: Provide equal opportunity (Spring, 2018, p.5).
Horace Mann described it as the, "great balance wheel of society"(Spring, 2018, p.5)."
1880s-1920: "Americanize" students, train kids for the work force, push anti-communism political agenda, reform urban areas and homes (Spring, 2018, p.6).
1920s-1940s: Growth of high schools to contain and control the expanding youth population (Spring, 2018, p.6).
Edward Ross coined the term "internal control" to describe public school's goal (Spring, 2018, p.6)
1950s-1980s: War on Poverty, major push for equal education, teaching students to go onto higher education (Spring, 2018, p.6).
1980s-2003: Wave of standardize testing, teaching more global concepts, implementing community service requirements (Spring, 2018, p.6).
Role of the teacher
Edward Ross believed teachers should be instilling secular values not tied to religion (Spring, 2018, p.40)
Many believed teacher's role should coincide with the school's role of acting as moral examples and pushing political ideologies (Spring, 2018, p.25).
Teachers need to be able to integrate all walks of life into one classroom. Horace Mann began this belief when his main platform proposed "mixing" all students from different wealth and race backgrounds (Spring, 2018, p.34-35)

Gender
1972 Title IX: bans gender discrimination practices in schools (Spring, 2018, p.131).
1975: federally regulated end of gender discrimination in sports (Spring, 2018, p.131).
2014 update to Title IX: "protect all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity (Spring, 2018, p.134)."
Disability
1975 Pubic Law 94-142: Education for all handicapped children (Spring, 2018, p.131).
1960 Civil Rights Movement: Pushed to have disabled students receive the same quality of education by demanding that extra help is provided (Spring, 2018, p.135).
2010 IDEA: U.S department of education reached 35 years of educating handicapped children (Spring, 2018, p.137).
Race
1896 Plessy v. Ferguson: "separate but equal (Spring, 2018, p.130)."
1954: Brown V Board of education of Topeka: declared the previous separate but equal act as unconstitutional (Spring, 2018, p.130).
1964 Civil Rights Acts: Bars any institutions that practice separate but equal from receiving federal funds (Spring, 2018, p.130).
