How do they work?
Assessments should be planned before instruction. Students are then taught in structured segments to practice and master the skills, knowledge, and understandings that will lead to success on the summative assessment. In addition summative assessments can be differentiated, as long as the differentiation does not prevent teachers from accurately collecting evidence showing how well students metthe targeted learning goals.

Diagnostic assessment(Fan Wu)
A diagnostic assessment is a form of pre-assessment where teachers can evaluate students' strengths, weaknesses, knowledge and skills before their instruction.
Examples:
Mind maps
Flow charts
KWL charts
Short quizzes
Journal entries
Student interviews
Student reflections
Graphic organizers

Performance assessment (Nina Ejirika)
Performance assessments are also known as "authentic" or "alternative" assessments. Students have to perform certain tasks instead of choosing answers from a provided list. These are used to assess student's progress and may be a better indicator of what the student knows since students have to produce something with all that they've learned (synthesizing information). :

Ipsative assessments (Veronica Simova)
Ipsative assessments are one of the types of assessment as learning that
compares previous results with a second try
, motivating students to set goals and improve their skills.
A two-stage assessment framework helps students learn from their mistakes and motivates them to do better.
