BREATHING & EXCHANGE OF GASES
Breathing, commonly known as respiration is the process of exchange of oxygen from the atmosphere with carbon-di-oxide produced by the cells.
RESPIRATORY ORGANS
1. Simple Diffusion throughout the body surface:
Invertebrates: Sponges, Coelenterates, Flatworms
2. Moist Cuticle:
Earthworms
3. Tracheal Tubes:
Insects: Cockroaches
4. Gills (Branchial respiration):
Aquatic arthropods, molluscs, vertebrates like fishes and amphibians like frogs
5. Lungs (Pulmonary respiration):
Vertebrates like humans, amphibians like frogs, reptiles like crocodile and mammals like birds
PARTS OF THE HUMAN RESPIRATORY SYSTEM:
External Nostrils
Nasal chamber which leads to nasal passage
Pharynx
Larynx opens into the trachea
The trachea is a tube extending till the mid-thoracic cavity
Alveoli
The terminal bronchioles terminate into very thin, irregular-walled and vascularized bag-like structures called Alveoli
Lungs
There are two in number in humans
Covered by double layered pleural membrane, which contains pleural fluid
Reduces friction on the lung surface
Present in the thoracic chamber
Bronchi
The trachea divides into two primary bronchi -- Left and Right
Bronchioles
Each bronchi undergoes repeated divisions, forming secondary and tertiary bronchi, ending up in very thin, terminal bronchioles
