Summative Assessments
Summative assessments are usually given at the end of a unit. They are used to assess the students' learning.
Examples: Midterm exams & End of unit exams, end of chapter exams.
Formative Assessments
Formative assessments occur throughout the lesson. They allow teachers to modify their lessons when needed and can be skewed, they can be given in groups or individual formative assessments.
Examples: Bell ringers given at the beginning of class, exit tickets, pop quiz, questions.
Interim/ Benchmarks
Interim/ Benchmarks are given at a district level throughout the school year. They are usually given at the BOY MOY and EOY. This allows the school or district to see the progress that the students have made.
Examples: Placement tests, unit tests, 6 weeks tests.
Performance Assessments
Performance assessments allow students to show their knowledge in a creative unique way aligned to the standards
Examples: Video recordings, PowerPoints, research paper.
Diagnostic Assessments
Diagnostic assessments test the student's skills in a domain and allow the teacher to adjust their teaching and give feedback to the students.
Examples: Running records, high-frequency words, letter-sound recognition.
