ASSESSMENTS
Summative: Think the word "summary"; these assessment allow the student to "summarize" what they learned throughout a unit or lesson. These generally hold higher point value and are done at the end of a unit and/or lesson.
Example: A final project in which students synthesize what they learned and incorporate several components of learning can be considered a summative assessment.
-
Diagnostic: Used to "diagnose" students in an academic sense: what their reading level is, their strengths and weaknesses in math, etc.
-
-
Performance: This type of assessment is non-traditional in that it does not ask for students to answer questions in the regular multiple choice or true/false fashion; instead, students are asked to perform a task or something of the sort.
Example: Having students retell or recite certain things (i.e. a retelling of a story, or reciting a formula).
-
Formative: Formative assessments hold little to no point value in the classroom. These assignments help the teacher in gauging where the students need help as they go through the lessons.
Example: students can draw a concept map that helps them organize the information that they have about a certain topic.
Example: Most standard "homework" assignments could be considered formative assessments. They provide an opportunity for students to practice what they have learned and allow the teacher to spot any misconceptions or struggle areas.
Interim/Benchmark: These are more standardized types of tests that allow the teachers to see where exactly the students are in terms of the state/grade level standards.
