Formative
Example 1: Students were taught a lesson over expanded form in second grade. At the end of the lesson, they were given an exit ticket with four questions. An educator uses the exit ticket to see if the students are understanding expanded form or if it needs to be retaught in a different way.
Example 2: Students were taught a lesson over proper nouns. An educator asked displayed sentences that contained proper and common nouns on the board. She asked her students to write what kind of noun it is on their dry erase board and hold up their boards to show their answers to the teacher.
Definition: Formative Assessments are used to assess students as they are learning to show what they know along the way. These assessments provide opportunities for the students to receive feedback and helps the educator guide their future instruction.
Interim/Benchmark
Example 1: Students were given a Reading STAAR test in May to assess students on their knowledge of the 3rd grade content they had been taught throughout the year.
Example 2: Students are given a end of six weeks math and reading test to show what they had learned in the six week period.
Definition: Interim/Benchmark Assessments are used to assess students on their current knowledge of the grade level content. This assessment targets students' areas of weakness within the grade level content.
Summative
Example 1: Students had just finished a unit over national symbols. They were given a 10 question exam that tested them on what they had learned in the unit.
Example 2: Students were just taught a unit over natural resources. They were given an assignment that asked them to write an essay over what a natural resource is and include three examples in their writing to test what they learned.
Definition: Summative Assessments are used to assess students at the end of a unit that was just taught to them. These assessments are administered to the students once they have finished learning the material for a unit.
Diagnostic
Example 1: An educator displays a K-W-L chart over Author's Purpose. They were asked what they know about it, what they still are wanting to learn about Author's Purpose, and has a blank for what they learn after being taught the content.

Definition: Diagnostic Assessments are used to assess students' prior knowledge of content that is about to be taught. This helps the educator understand what the students know and what they need more support with. This also helps educators target their students' misconceptions.
Performance
Example 1: Students have just learned the content of historical timelines. To show their knowledge of the content, they are asked to create their own timeline on a poster and present it to the their classmates and teacher in the room.
Example 2: Students have just learned the content over National Symbols and are asked to write a research paper over one of the ones they found interesting to them.
Definition: Performance Assessments are whenever a student is asked to express or show their knowledge by performing or completing a task other than a written assessment where they are asked to respond to questions.
