Formative: assessments (formal or informal) that are performed during the lesson or unit to gauge understanding and allows teachers to adjust instruction to meet student's needs.
Think-Pair-Share: a teacher can use this informal assessment to determine the student's understand as the "pairs" share in regard to the prompt of question provided. The teacher can listen in and/or ask pairs to share to the whole class to further understanding.
Exit tickets: example of assessment that helps the teacher gauge student understanding of the content been taught.
Diagnostic: assessment that is used to gauge the student's knowledge prior to a lesson, unit or school year. These assessments provide an insight on skills, understanding, knowledge as well as strengths and weaknesses.
Running Records: assessment tool that provides a closer look at a student's reading skills and reading level.
Computation Error Analysis: assessment that helps analyze the types and quantity of errors a student makes while solving mathematics problems to determine areas the student need additional support in.
Summative: assessments that help measure how much a student has learned in a set period of time (e.g. unit, semester, school year).
End-of-Unit Tests: test administered at the end of a unit in order to determine mastery and depth of understanding of the unit taught.
Portfolio: project-based assessments where students collect their work from a period of time (e.g. school year) and placed onto a portfolio. This provides a physical representation of the student's progress and skill development.
Performance: assessment type that is based on students performing a task rather than completing a test.
Laboratory Experiment: Students will have to follow specific procedures to complete and demonstrate mastery and understanding of content learned.
Research Paper: Students will need to demonstrate knowledge to complete research, the writing process and mastery and understanding of the topic assigned or chosen.
Interim/Benchmark: assessment that compares student understanding/performance against a set standard to determine current progress and estimate future progress.
STAAR: assessment tool used to gauge student understanding and mastery of state curriculum (TEKS) in one or various subjects.
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): assessment that is administered to determine the English Language ability of non-native speakers based on Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing.
