Opening

Formative Assessment
Definition: The process in which teachers gather evidence of student learning and provide academic feedback. Formative assessments are used to guide and adjust instruction. There are formal and informal formative assessments that teachers can use.
Exit Ticket: Students either answer a short 2 question "quiz" or write one thing they learned from the lesson and one thing they are still confused on.
In Class Discussions: The teacher holds a whole class discussion on the topic of the lesson they have been covering over the week or couple of days and the teacher can get an idea of student understanding.

Summative Assessment
Definition: Summative assessments are given at the end of a unit and are used to evaluate student learning over the specific unit taught. These assessments have a high grade value.
End of Unit Exam: Students are given a multiple choice exam that could include true or false and multiple choice questions that test the students understanding and knowledge of the unit.
End of Unit Project: Students are given expectations and rubric to complete a project of their choice (given from a list) where they show their understanding at the end of a unit.
Performance Assessment
Definition: Performance assessments require a student to perform a task, rather than answer questions on an average test.
Student Work Portfolio: Students create a portfolio of all their completed work and assignments that demonstrate their learning over a topic or unit.
Lab Investigation: In science, students can conduct a lab investigation to show their understanding over the science TEK covered that week.
Diagnostic Assessment
Definition: Diagnostic assessment is a form of pre-assessment where teachers can identify students strengths and weaknesses on the content before giving instruction.
Running Records or Screeners: Teachers are able to determine what reading level students are at, as well as their phonological awareness skills.
