Guiding Questions

Looking at the other children plants, how do you think they got their plant to grow?

Formative
Definition: Receiving in the moment feedback during a lesson which is evaluated to lead the Instruction.
Example: Classroom discussion during a lesson about weather and climate to see what students know or might have misconceptions about.

Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Recurring assessments that are given to see where students stand on certain learning content. This helps to guide future Instruction depending on the feedback received.

Summative
Definition: Evaluating student learning of a unit. These assessments are a literal sum of their learning for a unit.

Performance
Definition: Performance assessment aims to measure a performance of a student versus simply selecting an answer choice.
Example: A question that requires an extended response so the student demonstrates deeper understanding.
Example: Portfolio that a student creates with various tasks within one which demonstrates student knowledge of a content.
Diagnostic
Definition: A diagnostic assessment will inform teachers of gaps and/or student abilities. Usually given before entering a new unit.
