Formative
Definition: Process of gathering evidence of student learning, providing feedback and adjusting instruction to enhance student acheivement

Summative
Definition: Formal assessments used to measure what students have learned at the end of a defined
period of instruction
End of Semester Tests: Tests that are given at the end of a semester of learning that covers all content learned in the given semester.
End of Unit Tests: Tests that are given at the end of a unit that cover only content from that unit.
Interim/ Benchmark
Definition: Evaluations of student learning progress used to determine whether the students are on track to performing well on future assessments
MAP: This is a computerized adaptive test which helps teachers, parents, and administrators improve learning for all students and make informed decisions to promote a child's academic growth
STAAR: These tests are a series of standardized tests used in Texas public primary and secondary schools to assess a student's achievements and knowledge learned in the grade level.
Diagnostic
Definition: A diagnostic assessment is a form of pre-assessment where teachers can evaluate students' strengths, weaknesses, knowledge and skills before their instruction.
Initial Writing Prompts: These can be given to students to recall what they remember about a subject from the previous grade level.

Definition: It is a form of testing that requires students to perform a task rather than select an answer from a ready-made list.
