Assessment
-
Performance
testing that requires students to perform a task rather than select an answer from a ready-made list.
-
-
Formative
Monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning. More specifically, formative assessments: help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work. Are generally low stakes, which means that they have low or no point value.
-
-
Diagnostic
Form of pre-assessment where teachers can evaluate students' strengths, weaknesses, knowledge and skills before their instruction.
-
-
Interim/Benchmark
is administered at different intervals between instruction. The data from interim assessments can be used to measure student achievement, where students are starting, and their growth over time.
Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) and the Renaissance Star assessments have been adopted by districts and states as interim assessments.
STAAR stands for State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, which is the state's student testing program.
Summative
The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark. Summative assessments are often high stakes, which means that they have a high point value.
