Assessments
Formative
Definition: A wide range of methods for assessing how the students are understanding and preforming with the materials that are being taught in class. Essentially its a quick check to see how the students are doing and you can adjust to fit what they need.
Thumbs up, Thumbs down: Students are asked a question and they put their thumb up if they understand or know the answer. They will put their thumb down if they don't know or understand. Some students many put their thumb in between to show they are unsure.
Exit tickets: Students are give a posted note and they write their response to a question. They write their name on the back and then take it to the anchor chart and place it in the column that applies to them. I'm sure, I'm unsure and I don't know.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: A standardized problem or test that serves as a medium to evaluate or compare others performances/ results.
Checkpoints: A test created by a department head or Head of Curriculum to assess what students have learned in a three week time. Usually helps teachers see what needs to be spiraled back into the future lessons.
NWEA: (Northwest Evaluation Association) Is a computerized test that students take three times a year. Each time Teachers are seeing if the student had any growth from the previous test. There is a chart to determine if students scores fall into the norms for grade level.
Summative
Definition: This is a evaluation of how the student's understood and retained information after a unit or semester was completed. Summative assessments should only be over the information that the student learned in that time frame.
E.O.C : (End of Course) This is a test given to a student at the end of their course in high school. This test determines if the student has learned enough to be completed or if they need to retake the course.
Final Project: A final product that students must create in order to demonstrate what they learned for the whole year and usually have to incorporate many details and examples to show understanding and thoughtful creations.
Diagnostic
Definition: A type of test that gauges how well an individual will do in a certain area. It can also help identify areas of strengths and weaknesses.
Diagnostic Test: Anyone about to start a new lesson or section will take a test and the test will determine what areas they need to study in order to pass their actual test.
Running record: Teachers use running records to observe how a student is doing with their reading skills. Most teachers will determine what the students strength and struggles are while read a text/ book.
Performance
Definition: A test or demonstration a students skills or knowledge over or in a certain area. The test isn't written or verbal, but action based.
Oral presentation: A student gives a oral deliverance over a topic or event and gives insightful perspective or have a unique point of view that leads to creative discussions.
Reenactment: A student demonstrates their ability to retell a historic event in the perspective of a historic figure. The performance has to show emotion and a deep understanding of material.
