During Reading

Definition
After reading, pause and say something about what was read. This can be done as a class or in groups.
There is a set of rules that you could also post up:
1) With partner decide who will say something first
2)Make a prediction, ask a question, clarify something you had misunderstood, make a comment or make a connection.
3) if you can't do any of the 5 things then you need to reread.

After Reading
The most important word
Definition
After reading the text, you can ask your students to pick the most important word from their text. Omitting words like the or of can help. Also omitting names. After they pick the word they have to make the connection between that word and the Characters, plot, theme, settings, and conflict.

Pre-Reading

Definitions
Teacher picks a number of different phrases. Then puts 1 phrase on a notecard. Each student gets a notecard. Once the activity begins students have a goal of sharing their phrase with as many classmates as possible. Also listening to their partners card and trying to guess how the cards are related, and speculate on what the story is about.

Probable Passage
Definitions
The teacher picks 8-14 words from the passage that helps describe the passage and gives it to the students. The teacher creates a worksheet that has different blank boxes labeled: Characters, Setting, Problem, Outcomes, and Unknown Words where students can put those words.
In the middle is the Gist statement which is kind of like a guess to what the story is going to be about. They can look at the worksheet before, during and after reading the passage.
