Formative
Definition: Formative assessment is the essential component in that instructional process that helps ensure that students correctly reach the intended instructional goals. It is the process of gathering evidence of student learning where teachers provide feedback and may adjust instructional strategies to enhance achievement.
Exit Slips: At the end of the lesson the students can list things they learned, things they liked, and questions they may have.
Thumbs up/Thumbs down: The students give a thumbs up if they understood the lesson, thumbs down if they did not understand, or sideways if they understand but would like more practice.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/benchmark assessments are assessments given to students to determine their standing in their current grade level.

Definition: A performance assessment that provides educators with much-needed information on how a student learns compared to what he or she has already acquired.
Portfolios: The purpose may be to celebrate student accomplishment, meet predetermined criteria, follow student progress over time, or explore student though processes.
Student Logs: Such as fluency log where the students color in a graph that shows them their current standing and growth.
