Formative
Definition: a wide variety of methods that teachers use to conduct in-process evaluations of student comprehension, learning needs, and academic progress during a lesson, unit, or course.
Example: Students will complete a 5 question quiz on Kahoot with true or false questions and questions about the content.
Example: Students will complete an Exit ticket using a sentence that requires them write something interesting they learned, something they are still curious about, and something they are confused about.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: an evaluation of student learning progress, used to determine whether they are on track to performing well on future assessments.
Example: Map Test- a computer-adaptive skills assessment that provides parents, teachers and administrators with metrics to measure a student's growth and progress early in their academic life.
Example: Staar Math- These standards ensure that students are assessed only on material that serves an important role in preparing them for the next grade's material.
Summative
Definition:Summative assessment evaluates students' learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark. Summative assessments are often high stakes, which means that they have a high point value.
Example: Final Project-Final projects help students summarize and review content from the entire semester.
Example: Mid-Term Exam- an examination administered in the middle of an academic term using a set of questions or exercises to evaluate skills or knowledge.
Performance
Definition: Measures how well students apply their knowledge, skills, and abilities to authentic problems. It requires the student to produce something, such as a report, experiment, or performance, which is scored against specific criteria.
Example: Experiments-Testing how well students understand scientific concepts and can carry out scientific processes.
Example: Portfolios- Allows students to provide a broad portrait of their performance through files that contain collections of students' work, assembled over time.
Diagnostic
Definition: An assessment that allows a teacher to determine students' individual strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and skills prior to instruction.
Example: Polls- That ask students questions about what they know, what they are curious about, and one thing that learned.
Example: Observation and anecdotal notes- Frequent written descriptions of observations while learners are working. They provide a way to record aspects of learners' learning that might not be identified by other techniques, such as physical behaviours and attitudes.
