Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are used as a form of pre-assessment that identifies student understanding. This is used to identify misconceptions, strengths, or weaknesses. By using this information, teachers target these specific strengths/weaknesses/misconceptions.
Running Record: A form of assessment that ranks students at certain levels. Used to assess student reading levels.
I-Station ISIP Test: Benchmarking system used by NISD in order to pre-test and post-test students to determine what is needed to review, and what has improved overall.
Formative
Definition: Formative Assessments are a form of assessment used to change learning material as the lesson goes on. This is done by assessing student feedback in order to address misunderstandings or areas where students need further addressing.
Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down: Students are asked a thumbs up thumbs down question to assess whether students understand or do not understand the material.
Exit Ticket: Students answer a directed question about what they just learned in order to determine what students know about the topic, and what may need to be addressed in the next lesson.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are a form of assessment where student learning is evaluated and assessed at the end of large chunks of learning. These forms of assessments are generally higher stakes for students, and as such are more likely to have higher grading values.

Research Projects: Projects that require the student to summarize their learning on one topic or idea.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Benchmark assessments are used to identify areas that a few or large amounts of students need work on in order to stay on-track with their content understanding.
STAAR/TAKS: Standardized tests used to determine the overall understanding of students in a grade level.

Definition: Performance assessments are used to determine student knowledge based on performance. This is done in place of written tests or questions.
