Challenges
-
No effective legislation relating to the transport, management and description of waste being introduced for over 30 years
-
Multiple IT systems collect certain elements of waste tracking data which are fragmented and do not talk to each other
-
Some systems and data collected are run by contractors, others by government and where use of existing central digital systems is non-mandatory, take up is very low.
Waste crime take place including the operation of illegal waste sites, illegal waste exports and fly-tipping
Businesses do not have the information they need to identify and unlock the full potential value of waste materials to reduce raw material costs.
