Definition: A range of methods that teachers can use to evaluate student needs, comprehension on the topic, and progress.
Ex: Quizzes: At the end of a lesson teachers will give short quizzes to monitor student comprehension and to adjust further instruction.
Ex: Observations: Teachers will observe student discussion in group work to monitor topic discussion and to help with any misconceptions.
Definition: An assessment where student results are compared with a set of standards of the same school year.
Ex: Common Assessments: Given every 6-8 weeks students results are compared to where the grade level standards says they should be at by then.
Ex: ACPs: Assessment of Course Performance. Given once a semester to make instructional decisions for the upcoming semester.
Definition: Assess student performance at the end of an instructional unit.
Ex: Portfolios: a collection of products the student has made over a certain time period to showcase their learning.
Ex: Written Reports: A written paper students make to explain what they learned, the main ideas of the topic, and how they will benefit from learning.
Definition: Student must show their learning by performing a task, instead of answering questions on a test.
Ex: Speeches: Where students come to the front of the class and talk about what they have learned or created.
Ex: Science Project: Students practice the scientific method in an experiment and then share in front of the class the experiment and what they learned from it.
Definition: Student's current knowledge is tested with the use of multiple choice or open response questions.
Ex: Running Records: A tool used to determine the reading rate and errors of a student's reading capability.
Ex: Phonics Inventory: A reading assessment that measures fluency and how many sight words the student can decode.
