Bridging the Digital Divide in Classrooms
Increase Access to Technology
Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
Students bring their own devices from home so districts don't have to pay for devices.
Classrooms need reliable internet connection and a plan to utilize the technology.
Students might not have their own device or be willing to share.
Leasing Programs
Students can "lease" a device from the school at a lower cost.
Helps to create a student-parent contract where schools cover cost of repairs while students/parents are responsible for the devices.
A cheaper option than providing one-to-one devices for students.
Computer Labs
Many schools already have computer labs. Use them! Funding for technology in schools can decrease if technology is not utilized.
Time is limited in the computer labs so be prepared for lessons when using the lab.
Build a Technology Environment
Have a positive attitude
Be open to using new technology!
Attend professional development
This will help keep up with all the new technology that is out there.
Join peer networks to learn how to utilize technology from other educators.
Allow students to lead technology use in the classroom
This empowers and excites students!
Many students are fluent with technology and know how to get the most out of their resources.
Students will be more engaged and committed to learning.
Have a "no fear of failure" policy
Use failures as way to reflect and grow.
Teachers should have freedom to fail and should be rewarded for trying new things.
