Where documentaries are broadcasted
BBC
BBC 1
BBC1 is the main BBC channel which is aimed at more middle-class people with the more traditional type of documentaries like 'blue plant 2', they also only put the documentaries that they know will do well or ones that have done well on other channels s have been brought up.
BBC 2
BBC 2 shows a mixed-genre channel appealing to a broad adult audience. It should carry the greatest amount and range of knowledge-building programming of any BBC television channel, complemented by distinctive comedy, drama, and arts programming.
BBC 3
BBC 3 are target your audiences and this is very clear in the types of documentaries they broadcast, with a lot being about LGBT context and being inclusive
BBC 4
BB4 target audience is adults aged 35 and over and middle class, BBC 4 content is for older people focusing on more educational shows,
BBC documentaries: A Perfect Planet, Who Do You Think You Are?, Hospital, Life and Death Row
The BBC is funded through the public, as they pay a license fee which is what funds the BBC because of this the BBC cant take bigger risks with there documentaries, have smaller budget compared to these online services and have to make certain context like education documentaries, for young and old generations.
Channel 4
The service can target pupils and young adults with informal, innovative multi-media initiatives, and can appeal to the people traditional education services do not reach.
There were a lot of documentaries on the police force, A and E, vets, etc. Had a force on things that happen every day that the everyday person could relate to
Online streaming
Amazon prime
Don't make too many documentaries when I looked at prime, the more popular categories on prime were action and thrillers.
Amazons most popular documetries are the ones that they have bought, not their own amazon originals
Netflix
Very high-quality documentaries as they have massive budgets to spend on them, most of their documentaries are aboue either sport, crime and historical
A younger audience so their documentaries are usually higher paced or more dramatic, about the more entering topic to a teenager/young adult. Because these aged people have more free time the documentaries tend to be longer and in a series
ITV
1 digital channel across all time and prime time for all Adults, ABC1 Adults, Housepersons and ABC1 Women.
There aim is to be a leading creative force in global content production
These documentaries focus on more creative and business ideas, I think mainly because of what their aim is. But there isn't a documentaries tab on their site but one that is called 'Factual' which acts as one but in many targeting mums and dad as it is full of home life subjects, like cooking, etc
Dedicated channels
An explanation of a Dedicated would be 'Discovery', their target audience would be middle-aged men who have an interest in a certain subject or hobbies. This is because they specialize in documentaries that aim to educate people.
