Characteristics of Depression.
Depression is classed as a mood disorder.
Behavioural.
Shift in activity levels.
Individuals may see a reduction or increase in their activities.
Many individuals experience reduced energy levels: being tired and needing to sleep lots.
Some become increasingly agitated and restless and may pace around the room.
Appetite.
Appetite is effected by mood. Therefore, individuals are prone to over eating or losing appetite.
Emotional.
Formal diagnosis.
A formal diagnosis requires that an individual golds five symptoms of depression which must include either sadness or loss of interest in activities.
Sadness.
A very common feeling associated amongst depression sufferers.
This is combined with feelings of emptiness.
People may feel worthless, hopeless, have low self-esteem and generally overall negative emotions.
Loss of pleasure/ interest.
In usual hobbies and activities. Such behaviour is often associated with the feeling of losing control.
Anger.
Direct hatred towards others or inwards at their self.
Cognitive.
Negative self concept.
Negative emotions elated to depression are associated with negative thoughts like, negative self concept.
An individual may feel guilt or that they are worthless or do not matter.
Negative view of the world.
This is that expectation that things are always going to turn out badly rather than positively.
Negative view of the future.
Depression sufferers believe that negative situations are never going to change.
