Bullying Prevention
Responding to Bullying
Stop bullying on the spot
Intervene immediately
Separate kids involved
Make sure everyone is safe
Meet any immediate medical or mental health needs
Stay calm, reassure those involved
Model respectful behavior when intervening
Avoid:
Don't ignore and think kids can work it out
Don't immediately try to sort out the facts
Don't force kids to say publicly what they saw/heard
Don't question kids involved in front of other kids
Talk to the kids involved separately
Don't make them apologize or patch things up on the spot
Contact Police or Seek Medical intervention if:
A weapon is involved
Threats of serious harm or physical injury
Threats of hate motivated violence as in racism or homophobia
Serious bodily harm occurred
Sexual abuse
Illegal acts such as robbery or extortion - using force to get money, property, or services
School and Community Involvement
Bullying can threaten a student's physical and emotional safety and negatively impact their ability to learn
Assess bullying in your school
Engage parents and youth
Create policies and rules
Build a safe environment
Educate students and staff
Work in the community
Develop comprehensive community strategies
Become a teacher ambassador
Build a culture of acceptance and awareness with in the school environment
