Stephen Meeting Writeup - 2021-06-16
Stone sampling
Stephen didn't realise BU had enough money to pay for it, so no need to apply to the Foundation
Proceed with application through BU then
Future Project Funding
Roman Baths Foundation is a good candidate
Use groups in list I made previously
E.g. Somerset Arch Soc, Association for Roman Studies etc.
Stephen recommended spreading the funding grants between a range of differnt organisations
Smaller grants gives an organisation value for money by only contributing a small amount for a significant output
Objectives can also be scaleable depending upon which grants are fulfilled
Additional objectives will only be stated in extra applications, meaning that original funders might get more than originally funded for if other applications go through!
Stephen did note that RBF is keen to switch to supplying smaller, sustainable research grants for projects after periods of large funding grants for stuff like Archway project
While my project could end up in tens of thousands mark, it is clearly small change in comparison
Will still need to split project costs between multiple funding bodies
Project objectives
Needs to be clear, explicit and achieveable in time frame available
Conservation/museum side of things can go in as a separate application, as not research and unlikely to be funded by study organisations
Project objectives should meet Museum and RBF core aims, e.g. conservation (with research part of this), learning, engagement etc.
Learning/conservation already covered, but will need to incorporate public activities to fulfil this side
Zosia said these activities can be anything public-oriented, not strictly stuff that will contribute to outcomes
Any public-facing work, e.g. stall at RB, presentations to local societies, visits to schools, will probably be enough
Alternatively, can go big on an experimental archaeology workshop making and firing CBM, perhaps to make a little scale model or something
Possibility of hiring intern from under-privileged background/BAME to hit inclusivity targets (dependent upon funding for the museum side!)
Project organisation
Point of contact
Could be BaNES council as focussed on Roman Bath
Could stay at BU or move to another uni and launch it from there instead
Who will be paying my grant monthly and responsible?
What timescale am I expecting?
Important to have limited objectives that can be completed in the time allocated, and not let it drag on
Good time to do it as I will still have impetus, whereas once I do another project I will never find the time to come back and do it
Draw up proposal ahead of submission to RBF and other bodies in autumn/end of year
In a few months, after results section is underway, will sit down and identify what exactly needs to be done, how this can be accomplished and timescale and money/equipment etc. necessary for that
Will need to prep drafts for feedback from supervisors and Stephen, as well as liase with Zosia to make sure the proposals complement each other
