      - The United States Enters The War
        
        On December 7, 1941, Japanese planes made a surprise attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor.
        
        The next day, the United States joined the Allies and declared war on Japan, Germany, and Italy.
        
        The U.S. Navy stopped them at the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942.
        
        The Allies began pushing Japan back in a process called island-hopping.
