Computational Fluency
Project
CAN provide students opportunities to compose multimodal narratives, instead of just critically analysing them (c.f. Peppler)
Students are not given puzzles to solve or problem solving activities. Did they really develop computational thinking, or the kind of problem solving skills or embedded knowledge that Resnick discussed?
Animation is seen as easier types of coding activities, and less explored in the literature.
Students planned the project with the Scratch sprite library, and they take into consideration the kind of sprites that are available, the style they are in, the motions that the costumes afford. They often find that the sprites
Passion
-
Not all kids are passionate about storytelling or coding (ND interview). N said in post-interview - he loves his project but hates Scratch.
Teacher priorities - alignment with syllabus and school requirements, prioritising narrative structure and coherence over multimodal elements.
-
Peer
-
Small room, but some sharing ideas across pairs were present.
-
-
-
-
Online community - they have watched some Scratch projects, but not really for inspiration or look inside them. It doesn't sound like they were looking at them critically.
Play

Image editing tool
Some tools were intuitive to play with, others were not
Pen tool was confusing but important for manipulating facial features for expression and for gestures. (EL)
Students were switching between bitmaps and vectors without understanding the difference. They thought it's just different editing tool sets (EL)
EL used other image editing tools (Pixlr, Photoshop)
ND felt very limited. Sometimes the facial expressions could not be selected for editing. With Abby, they just drew an angry expression with thick stroke, which they were not happy about. After that they just gave up. They also tried to do a rear view of the girl, but they were only able to delete the facial features but not able to play with her hair. D does pencil drawing but he's not comfortable with editing images using a mouse.
When it is used well, it is very powerful. What JC loved most about their project was the change of facial expressions they were able to draw
Sound
-
EL said in the post-interview that the sound options in Scratch was very limited. If they could use Premiere Pro, then they could do things like echo in the forest.
Sprite options
EL said the sprite options were very limited. Once they have chosen a certain style, their options are already limited. Then each sprite can only do certain actions. They could modify the sprite, but it was time consuming. L just wants to do 3D.
