Genetics Lecture Notes #1
What is genetics?
How did genetics come about?
Through the early study of cells
Compound microscopes developed leading to in depth study of cells by Hans and Zachiaras Jansen -1590's
Robert Hooke
1665- study of cells in cork sections
Anton van Leeuwenhoek
father of microbiology- studied single cell organisms and observed bacteria
Cell Theory
Discovered by - Matthias Schleiden & Theodor Schwann
1830's - described cells in plants and animals
What
All life composed of cells and cells are basic building blocks of human life.
Expanded by Rudolph Virchow
decided that every cell come from another cell- giving evolutionary basis
Nucleus Discovery
Robert Brown 1831- provided the first description of the nucleus of cells,
Cell Division
Water Fleming, Theodor Boveri, Walter Sutton
coined chromosome separation during cell division
Germ Plasm Theory
August Weismann- 1889- reproductive organs have full sets of genetic information and the sperm and egg cells carry genetic info and is brought together by fertilization.
Early Philosphers Hypothesized
Humans
Aristotle - proposed blood of the parents provides the embryo with everything the child needs- hypothesizing that children resemble parents bcuz of blood.
Hippocrates hypothesized that body parts of embryos came from parents.
Plato- suggested promotion of breeding of soldiers to gain the best army.
Plants
Early humans selectively bred plants and animals.
