The Reservation policy
Give tribes a small piece if land to have instead of moving with the bison as they used to
Took them away from open prairie spaces
American Actions pre 1860
Early Westward Expansion: meant America would start wanting NA lands
Wars weakened Native Americans

President Jackson forced the 5 civilised tribes to go west as they wanted their land
This resulted in 2000-4000 deaths as the NA were not given enough Government supplies

Meant that thousands of people went west in a very short space of time
Actions of the US Government after 1860
Civil War
Accelerated up westward expansion

Attitudes of Whites settlers:
Kill the Indian, save the man
Assimalation
Boarding Schools
Young NA children were taken and put into western boarding school to americanise them
Would slowly destroy NA culture
Would anger NA
The Dawes Act
Divided land so that Each NA male got 160 acres of reservation land

NA became US citizens (they didn't want to be)
Left over land would be sold to white settlers so NA lost reservation land
