Main protagonist, fan of movies, appears releaxed however is a generally stressed person, commited crimes in the past which caused many problems in his life. he is a broken man who is now in a monotonuaes life constantly oppressed by parole officers and a system which unfairly treats him. he wants to change his life and find a way to change his image in the eyes of the law. He regrets the choices he made and wants to return to his old life. he is often shown to not be a perfect peson: pushing people away and getting angry however the audience must understand his reasoning for his actions and sympathise with him.
Kelly Hicks
Appointed therapist to carl, sympathetic toward his situation however somewhat afraid of his capabilities, she often gives advice that we as the audience would give however carls actions and perception of those instructions should call into question how we help people. When informed of the tapes she shows distrust to them and advises Carl way from it, however this is the single thing that breaks Carls connection to her and counter to before this he is now distant and deceptive.
Ron Weaver
Relaxed, Kind and social person. works at a coffee shop because he likes the social aspect and enjoys his job. He is a fundementally happy person who is shown to understand Carl and shows who he could be if he didnt commit to the mystery of the series. Not easily scared and is a huge fan of horror games and movies and the actors behind them
Amy Price
Carl and Rons friend, Filmmaker, her carl and ron met in high school and became friends over horror media however she persued the movie making side of things and got into the buisness and makes semi popular film that often win awards. she involves ron and carl in her movies on occasion. she always makes attempts to help carl bu is more disconnected from him as she has wavering trust to him. she is a funny and kind person who ron respects.
Seth Burke
Seth Burke is the person who owns the VHS store parallel to Carls building, he is a mysterious cryptic person who leads Carl toward the truth without revealing much as his family has hidden the truth for years and the evidence is hidden of the Tapes.
Character Arcs
Carl: Starts as a broken person living a dull life but his drive leads him through a seemingly surface level mystery which with time descends into sinister territory and pushes him past a point where he is satisfied in life to a place he is in danger because he becomes dependant and obsessed with a disturbing mystery which had originally brought him a sense of purpose. His arc is a negative one, it initially is developed in a positive way as his drive and intrigue change the story and allow him to grow as a person however this turns negative and his state worsens but his drive does not allow him to escape.
Seth: becomes more unreliable and sinister as his unwillingness to subtltey convey evidence lead to danger which forces his fear
Ron and Amy: there willingness to carl diminishes with time and their sympathy fades as he distances himself from them.
Monsters
The Torn Man, horribly tall, crooked figure with riped flesh connected by stables and stitches, his skin is the colour of coal and has no human features, just a tall frame crooked frame which reaches blurs into the sky.
Rules: These monsters exsist in film but their presence in reality is strengthened by sacrifice and media surrounding the sacrifices. They can influence the minds of those heavily subjected to video altered by them like the torture videos in the POW camp and the VHS tapes in the store there was a murder at.
The Melting Mole: A large human made of tar and blood, its form remains but its skin and most flesh has melted away. It has a horrible scream that shakes the very earth itself and unlike the torn man it is quite secretive and tunnels under the ground and subjects people to psychological torture.
Internal Mystery
Presentation: VHS tapes, seemingly unrelatated, they are presented as disturbing, sinister or outright scary however they all contain details and secret messages that lead to an underlying mystery of people creating movies to conceal information about murders commited by a man who was being told to commit murders by these monsters which are trapped in these videos of areas.
Underlying Mystery: A man is tortured in a POW camp and is subjected to graphic mind altering videos and ancient pictures and legends of monsters. He was rescued but was mentally damaged and saw the monsters he was shown constantly. the monsters told this mentally damaged man to commit multiple murders and film the aftermath to give them a vessel into this world. after commiting the murders he was commited to a sanitarium but was not found out. He started a family after 16 years in the sanitarium but one day killed his wife after seeing the monsters in his walls and returned to the location of the first murder with all the tapes he could find as well as killing all people he told and then set himself and the tapes on fire on live television. however he threw one of the tapes he made into the lake and the monsters are preserved on it and with time their existence in our reality was reinforced by horror made at those locations. these tapes are warped by the monsters presence within them.
Story Development
The protagonists desperation to find the meaning in the tapes turns to addiction and drives the plot forward creating tension and conflict and in turn momentum in the story. At the start the stry revolves around a man trying to turn his life around and seeking help in a positive way. this then leads to a positive intrigue in details in horror movies, this analysis and mystery this creates a subtle unease in the audience as we can see the potentially sinister elements. further developing this Carl becomes dependant and this leads to him obsessing, this healthy insterst has become negative and this is reflected in the tone and horror in the show. things seem worse for the character the mystery and the show reflects this. this spirals further to a point where carl shuts people out and he investigates this mystery beyond some moral boundries. he still clings to the hope it brought hime but the show has now become horrific and undeniabley scary. the mystery is unfolding but damaging the character. this eventually leads to uncertain situations that make the audiedience question whether or not this is in his head or real. the police eventually apprehend carl but he remnants of his paranoia linger with him. the cell door opens one night and he leaves past multiple dead guards, from here the tone shifts and the character is in a state of fully beliving this all. he watches the last tapes and pieces together the myster which leads him back to the site of the first murder and he figures out the conncetions beetween all the murders and confronts the monsters which he once feared nad finds and destroys the artifact deep in the underwater caves. however at the end we see camera footage of him killing the guards and then footage of hime dead covered in wounds in the camp lake.
