HISTOLOGY PART 3
STRUCTURE
-
CORTEX
Specific thymic epithelial cells>>form the large part of lobule parenchyma>>join with capillaries= Blood Thymic Barrier
Immature cells>>contained in large no.s in cortical areas of thymus>>differentiate & kept separate from making contact with the blood because they are not immune competent & selection process of self-reactive clone has not occured

-
-
THYMUS GLAND FUNCTIONS
-
Immunological self tolerance>>able to distinguish foreign & self-anntigens>>eliminate the self-reactive lymphocytes.
-
Hormone secretion>>thymulin, thymopoietin, thymosin>>regulation of t-cell maturation and lymphoid tissuedevelopment
-
BLOOD THYMUS BARRIER
thymic epithelial cells joined by cellular junctions>>prevents passage of (immature) cells from the cortical lobule into bloodstream
-
T-CELL DIFFERENTIATION
responsive to MHC 1 & 2 >>MHC1: CD8 , MHC2:CD4
Immature t-cells migrate to thymus>>double negative cells(2 markers of t-cells-CD4(Maker for t-helper cell) & C48)
MALT/GALT
Waldeyer's ring , peyer's patches GALT , Appendix GALT
