Phonics
Phonics
Systematic instruction means teaching concepts in a clearly defined, carefully selected, logical instructional sequence.
Explicit instruction means teaching in a way where concepts are clearly explained and modeled with no vagueness or ambiguity
“Instruction is explicit when the teacher clearly, overtly, and thoroughly communicates to students how to do something”
A scope and sequence is an outline or list of all the ideas and concepts and the order that they will be taught and is a key component of systematic instruction.

Assessment is key to knowing individual child levels of development and is necessary to know where, in the phonics scope and sequence, to begin instruction.
Organizing Data
One way to organize assessment data is to create a spreadsheet. The spreadsheet should include each student’s name and each component addressed during the assessment. The following is an example of what a spreadsheet of CORE Phonics Survey assessment results might look like. The teacher simply transferred assessment data from each child’s CORE Phonics Survey teacher record form page 1 onto a class record sheet.
The next step is to color code numbers: green, yellow, or red. Think of a child’s progress like a stoplight. Green means go: the child is on track and is progressing successfully. Yellow means slow down and watch out: the child is a little bit behind and needs a little extra help to catch up. Red means stop and carefully monitor the child: the child is behind and needs a great deal of instruction and help to catch up. The following chart breaks down how to color code assessment data.
Place them in groups as to which areas they struggle in so that you can teach them based on their needs.
