These great lords then parcelled out small portions of land to lesser lords on similar terms, who did the same to local lords, who did the same to peasants
The king parcelled out large estates to great lords knowns as tenants in chief in exchange for their military and political support

two groups of workers:

Serfs: workers bound to the land by contract with the nobles. They had to serve for life unless this servant was able to pay his or her freedom.
Freemen: skilled workers who paid rent and could leave the manor whenever they wished ( they usually had a skill needed for someone in the manor.
