Who was he? / early life
Revolutionary and political figure. Led the Bolshevik takeover of Russia in 1917. Head of the first communist state: The Soviet Union
Born in Simbirsk, Russia on April 1870
Grew up in fairly privileged circumstances
Received a typical upper class education
Began to develop radical political views in disagreement with the Tsars (fueled by his older brother's execution in 1887 for plotting to kill the Tsar).
Graduated from secondary school with high honors, enrolled at Kazan university.
Was shortly expelled due to partaking in a political demonstration.
Was permitted to continue his studies and obtained a law degree in 1891.
Later life / political beliefs
Moved to Petrograd in 1893
At this point he already admired Karl Marx
He was becoming a Marxist Revolutionary
Marx believed in an international revolution by the poor and working classes. They would organize a new system of power. Property would be communally owned and work would be distributed equally under this new system.
Got arrested in 1897, spent some months in jail, and was exiled to Siberia for a period of three years
There he met Nadezhda Konstantinovna Krupskaya, a fellow Marxist, whom he married in 1898
After being released from his exile in the summer of 1900, he would move to Europe where he resided for the next 17 years.
During this period he would write, debate, and organize with other European intellectuals.
Later life / political beliefs 2
European Marxists discussed and prepared for the possibility of a major war breaking out among several European Nations
Both in 1907 and 1912, Socialists met and condemned such a war in advance.
Lenin, however, actively opposed any European war effort but went as far as stating that, if a war should occur, he'd transform it into a workers revolution.
World War 1 began while Lenin lived in Switzerland, where he attended several conferences of radical socialists opposed to the war.
After studying a large quantity of literature on the Marxist idea of state government, Lenin devised the first draft of a book on the subject, The State and Revolution.
He also studied literature covering world politics at the time, and he went on to write an important book called "Imperialism: The Highest Stage of Capitalism," in 1916
Lenin wrote to a friend stating that he would not live to see a revolution 1 month before the overthrow of the Russian Tsar in the winter of 1917.
As the Tsar abdicated, and the provisional government was established, Lenin, along with his fellow Bolsheviks, returned to Russia where they promised the people peace, land, and bread. This turned public opinion in their favor.
As the Bolsheviks stormed the Winter Palace and took control over key parts of Petrograd, the first communist state was established.
Their party suffered through several trials and tribulations, Lenin was nearly assassinated, the harsh German peace treaty took 1/4 of the Russian population and 1/4 of their industry, the civil war was atrocious and bloody, and Lenin suffered several strokes as a consequence of the stress.
The Red Terror ensued, and Lenin died on January 21st, 1924, without having witnessed his communist state in it's true glory.
QUESTION RESPONSE
Based on the quotes given by Lenin, we can surmise that he viewed communism and imperialism as a parasite, seeing as they thrived off the exploitation of the weak. He also describes a capitalist democracy as one for an insignificant minority and for the rich. Additionally, Lenin states that those who seize the means of power and strength can control those who don't possess such privileges despite greatly outnumbering them.
