MS Topic 3 Lift & Escalator
Introduction
The installation of lift and escalator has an overall bearing on the efficient functioning of the building
Types of building and occupancy will have a bearing on the types and numbers of lift escalator to be provided
Lift
Suitable for infrequent traffic
Take up less space
More viable for trips exceeding 6 storeys
Number of Lifts
Tall building requires more lifts - height of building
More smaller lift is better than less number of large lift
Staggered time will reduce number - occupants start and end time
Type of occupancy - more lift for offices than residential buildings
Number of occupants determine number of lift
Round Trip Time (RTT)
Cycle time taken back and forth from first floor to highest floor with probable number of stops
Factors affecting RTT
Car speed - Higher top speed (M/S), shorter RTT
Speed of door operation - Time taken for door to shut/open, adding significant time at every stop
Travel distance - taller building, longer RTT
Number of stops - Shorter RTT for lift with express floors
Plan shape of car - Rectangular car with door on the longer side will have shorter RTT
Escalator
Reversible
Steer people in the chosen path
Traffic can flow in steady streams for a limited vertical distance.
Provide continuous service
Lift/Escalator System
Lift serves higher floors, Escalator serves lower floors
Should be located to serve greatest number of people
Lift should be located in central area near entrance grouping together to reduce waiting times
Escalator need not stack vertically, they may be placed in location best fit traffic lanes
Average Waiting Time (Interval Time)
RTT/2N
Time spent to wait for lift
N is number of lifts serving the same floor
Zoning of lifts
Improve handling capacity
Reduced travel time
Different groups of lifts going to certain floors only
Reduce hardware
Use in very tall building
Reduce power consumption
Disadvantages
Increase waiting time
Less reliable due to fewer lifts in a group
