Different types of Energy
Kinetic energy
The energy possessed by a body due to its state of motion is known as kinetic energy.
Work energy theorem - the increase in the kinetic energy = work done on the body
W.D. = F X S and v2 - u2 = 2aS or S = (v2 - u2) / 2a
hence, W = ma X (v2 - u2) / 2a thus, 1/2 m v2 -1/2m u2 = work done. and hence, work done = increase in kinetic energy.
Forms of Kinetic Energy - 1) translational - the kinetic energy possessed by a body due to its motion on a straight path. example: a car moving on a straight path. 2) rotational - kinetic energy possessed by a body due to its rotation pal motion. example: a rotating fan. 3) vibrational - kinetic energy possessed by a body due to its to & fro movement. example: energy possessed by a wire.
formula - 1/2 mv2 or 1/2 X mass into velocity square
on doubling the velocity of motion, the kinetic energy becomes 4 times.
the kinetic energy possessed by a moving body’s equal to the amount of work which the moving body can do before coming to rest.
Different forms of energy
Potential energy
Energy possessed by a body due to it's position or size and shape is called potential energy
It is usually denoted by the letter U
the potential energy is of two types
The gravitational potential energy of a body at a height above the ground is measured by the amount of work done in lifting it up from the ground to that height against force of gravity - assuming gravitational potential energy on ground is zero
Gravitational potential energy
The potential energy possessed by a body due to the force of attraction of Earth on it.
Gravitational potential energy = U = mgh
Elastic potential energy
the potential energy possessed by a body in deformed state due to change in it's shape and size
W ( work done ) = force of gravity ( mg ) x displacement ( h )
Conversions
Energy are of different types.
Mechanical to Electrical. Eg:-Dynamo
Electrical to Heat energy Eg:-Electric iron
Electrical to Sound. Eg:-Loud speaker
Electrical to Chemical Eg;-Charging a battery
Chemical to light energy. Eg:-Lighted candle
Electrical to Light energy. Eg:-Electric bulb
Electrical to Mechanical. Eg:-Motor
Heat to Electrical. Eg:-Thermo couple
Sound to Electrical. Eg:-Microphone
Chemical to Electrical. Eg:-Cell in use
Light to Chemical. Eg:-Photosynthesis
Light to Electrical. Eg:-Photocell
Solar Energy - It is energy radiated by sun. Many inventions like Solar Panels, Solar Cells, Solar Furnace and Solar Cars are invented to make efficient use of Solar Energy.
Heat Energy - It is the energy released on burning of a object like coal. Sun is also source of Heat Energy.
Hydro Energy - It is the energy possessed by fast moving water. It is generally used to generate electricity in hydroelectric power stations.
Electrical Energy - It is a type of kinetic energy caused by moving electric charges.
Light Energy - it is a form of energy in presence of which other objects are seen. Its sources are all objects which can burn or which burn or which glow and sun.
Chemical Energy - It is the energy which can react chemically. Fossil Fuels have chemical energy. Plants uses this energy for Photosynthesis.
