castros basic aim was to preserve cubas independence
he was never allowed soviet ideology to influence him greatly and his close ties with the soviet union were a matter of expediency, in a hostile, capitalist world
the soviet union ws only a dependable supliet of fuel and a purchaser of cuban goods
the dependence that cuba had on the soviet union put a hold on his aims for liberation movements in africa and latin america
he was eager to embarass the USA, to promote his leadership at home, and elevate cubas cubas position as leader of latin america
he expected the soviet union to back him in his anti colonial campaign, but even they were reluctant due to the cuban missile crisis
they warned castro not to make internation problems and then threatened the soviet supply of oil to cubans
as a result after the 1970s cuba developed some degree of self sufficiency
