What was its impact?
Aflaj exploits limited renewable water resources, whether in the form of groundwater (Dawoodi), springs( Aini), or wadi base-flow (Ghaili) Water storage within the system combined with its efficient distribution will enable farmers to produce such crops.
Around 1000 BCE new villages and towns grew in the UAE interior by practicing agriculture due to the development of Falaj.
Falaj was one of the important and sophisticated resources for water for the people of UAE in the ancient times.
The Persians learnt the principle and working of Falaj from the people living on the Arabian side which significantly contributed to the development of Iran.
How does the Falaj work?
-
It doesn't use machines to extract water, but depends on gravity to force water to flow through its channels.
This also controls how water is divided fairly and equally among different farms and surrounding areas
When was the Falaj used?
The famous Al Ain Aflaj system is reported to have existed from around 1000 years BC, making it the oldest in the region.
It is an ancient irrigation system that has been an integral part of Al Dakhliya, Al Batinah and Al Sharqiyah regions in Oman since 500 AD.
