How energy souces are used
Tidal power
The water is held back by a tidal barrage.
Tidal barrage: It's a small dam that releases water back through a turbine.
The amount of power that is generated is dependent on the change in tide level throughout the day.
Uses the natural rise and fall in the level of water in an area during a day.
Solar power
Most electricity that is produced by this uses photovoltaic cells.
Photovoltaic: All work on the principle that certain materials produce a small electric charge when exposed to light.
The main exception in the way electricity is produced.
Energy sources such as fossil fuels, biofuels and nuclear and geothermal power are usually used to heat up water produce steam.
Other energy sources, such as wind, wave tidal and hydroelectric power, are used to turn a turbine directly without the need to produce steam first.
Wave power
Power is produced by channelling the energy of waves at sea.
Electricity generation may stop when the weather is calm.
Uses a turbine and generator to generate electricity.
Energy sources can be burnt (combusted) to produce heat or light, the main use for many of them is the manufacture of electricity.
Electricity is generated by electromagnetic induction, that transforms kinetic energy (the energy from movement) into electrical energy using loops of a conducting material such as copper and a magnet.
A power source is needed to rotate the coils. This comes from a turbine connected to the generator. That are designed to provide the rotary motion needed in the generator.
As the coils are rotated close the magnet, electricity is generated. Over many years the process within this generator has been made more and more efficient.
