BLOOD CLOTTING
What are they?
solid clumps that form in the blood and prevent you from bleeding excessively when injured
How are they created?
when certain parts of your blood thicken triggered by an injury sometimes in the blood vessel
when your blood doesn't flow properly
blood cells called platelets rush to the opening of an injured area. Proteins in the liquid part of your blood make the platelets stick to the hole. Both form a sticky plug that stops the blood from flowing out, blood clots
high BP
Risks of blood clots
heart attack
blood clot completely obstructs a coronary artery supplying blood to the heart muscle and heart muscle dies
CAUSING: death
stroke
a blood clot blocks the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain
CAUSING: temporary or permanent disabilities, paralysis
pulmonary embolism
blood clots that form in the pulmonary veins in the lungs resulting in low oxygen levels in the blood
CAUSING: damage to the lungs, heart, and other organs
kidney faiiure
Fluids and waste can build up causing a number of other complications including high blood pressure
CAUSING: arteries around the kidney to narrow, harden and weaken and not deliver enough blood to kidney tissues
deep vein thrembosis
clot forms in a deep vein in an arm or leg
CAUSING: serious complications if clots break away and travel to the lungs and can cause pulmonary embolism
pregnancy complications
Blood clots that form in pregnancy usually occur in the veins of the pelvis or lower extremities causing risk of pulmonary embolism
CAUSING: secondary premature labor, miscarriage, and maternal death
Signs
Swelling
Change in colour
warm skin
pain
trouble breathing
cramping
coughing
dizziness
People at risk
Obese
Pregnant
cancer patients
people on bed rest
smokers
people who use birth control
people who have done hormone replacement surgery
autoimmune patients
HOW THE SUCCESSFULLNESS OF MINIMISING BLOOD CLOTTING IS TESTED
Urine test
looks for a piece of a protein called D-dimer, which appears in the blood as a clot starts breaking apart
(t-PA) test
a critical blood clot dissolver called tissue-type plasminogen activator
blood tests
tests levels of platelets in blood and identify if any blood
looks for a piece of a protein called D-dimer, which appears in the blood as a clot starts breaking apart

HOW IS IT PREVENTED?
blood thinning
increase blood flow
injections
increasing proteins that dissolve/decrease blood clotting
