Medications
Penicillin-type drugs with a beta-lactamase inhibitor such as Zosyn (piperacillin and tazobactam), Unasyn (ampicillin-sulbactam)
Cephalosporins such as Rocephin (ceftriaxone), Cefotan (cefotetan)
Carbapenem such as Merrem (meropenem), as Merrem (meropenem), Invanz (ertapenem)

the patient receives antibiotics, intravenous fluids, and possibly GI decompression.

Interventions
before surgery, the patient should be placed in a semi-Fowler or side-lying position with the hips flexed
If rupture is suspected, elevate the patient's head to localize the infection.
Assist the patient in turning, coughing, and deep breathing to promote expansion of the lungs.
Incentive spirometry can also be useful. Show the patient how to splint the incision during deep breathing using a pillow or blanket.
