World war I
Causes and Alliances
1800s, European nations' competition for trade, resources, and colonies grew more intense. Nationalism threw whole regions of Europe into conflicts.
They formed alliances, which in this case were to fight one another's enemies.
1914, these alliances had created two hostile groups
Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy formed the "Triple Alliance"
Britain, France, and Russia formed the "Triple Entente"
If any one of these nations went to war, its allies were bound to join.
