reciprocity
a description of how two people interact - mother and infant interaction is reciprocal in that both infant and mother respond to each others signals and each elicits a response from the other
-
from around 3 months this interaction is increasingly frequent and involves close interaction with each others verbal signals and facial expressions
-
interactional synchrony
when the mother and infant reflect both actions and emotions of each other and do this in a co-ordinated way
Metzoff and Moore found in two week old babies an association between the expression or gesture the adult had displayed and the actions of the babies.
-
Isabella et al found that high levels of synchrony were associated with better quality mother infant attachment
evaluation
strength - observations used to capture fine detail. observations of mother infant interaction are well controlled and usually filmed. it ensures fine details of the interaction are recorded and later analysed, increasing the validity of the results
limitation - researchers don't know if behaviour is deliberate. many studies have shown the same patterns of interaction, merely hand movements and changes in facial expression. we cannot know for certain that the behaviours observed have a special meaning
-
definition
a close, two way emotional bond between two individuals in which each sees the other as essential for emotional security
