procedure - 44 criminal teenagers accused of stealing - interviewed for signs of affectionless psychopathy and their families were interviewed too to see if they had prolonged separation from their mothers - compared to control group
findings - 14 of the 44 thieves could be described as affectionless psychopaths. of the 14, 12 had experienced prolonged separation from their mothers in the first 2 years of their lives.

limitation - there is poor evidence. Bowlby drew on a number of evidence even those orphaned during the Second World War. war orphans were traumatised and had poor aftercare
limitation - Bowlby himself carried out the assessments and family interviews, knowing what he wanted to find
limitation - Rutter claimed that Bowlby may have been muddling two concepts together. Rutter drew a distinction between deprivation, the loss of a primary attachment figure after an attachment has developed, and privation where no attachment is formed in the first place. this limits the internal validity
