White flight- in the second half of the 20th century, Detroit's troubled time prompted middle-class white families to move out of the icyt to the suburbs of metropolitan Detroit. The migration was made possible by their higher incomes, as they could afford to commute. Many jobs followed the relocation.
Steel Boom
Detroit saw a significant population growth in the nineteenth century, but expansion finally took off in the 20th century.
Companies manufactured new standardised consumer products for customs across the USA and eventually for export around the world. E.g. Ford and General Motor used innovative production.
Southern Michigan was part of the larger region within the USA, known as the Steel Belt. Waterways and canals were established.

During the 20th century, millions of African Americans travelled from the rural southern states to the urban north-east to apply or new jobs- this was known as 'The Great Migration'.
The KKK has a great deal of support in the area, which meant whites often were guaranteed jobs. THe african Americans felt pushed out of the economic opportunities and stuck to the laboring.

Decline
From the 1970s onwards, an international oil crisis prompted river to buy vehicle with greater fuel economy.
Competitors from Asia such as, Honda, Nissan and Toyota produced more desirable models, causing Detroit's big employers to suffer a decline in sales and profits.
Ford and General Motors ended up cutting jobs and shutting down less efficient plants. It led to a rising number of unemployed, Detroit daw a fall in taxes raised by city authorities.

Race riots in the 1940s and 60 demonstrated the racial tension. Ghettos were reinforced and the racial divide.
33 people died in the Detroit riots. 7,000 people were arrested and over 1,00 buildings were burnt down.
Despite the economic decline, Detroit still backed the auto industry
. The General Motors Hamtramck Assembly Plant was built in Poletown.

Over 8 Mile road people earn more thea $100,000 dollars a year, including Grosse Pointe. Then in the inner city areas, many are restricted to less than $6600 a year
