The functions of the HoC
Representation - MPs protect the needs and interests of the people in their constituency in Parliament.

Debate - MPs debate major issues in order to determine what is the best outcome for their constituents.
Law making - The House of Commons makes legislation. It is the supreme law-making authority in the UK.

Providing ministers - All ministers must be members of parliament. They make up the cabinet and shadow cabinet.
The functions of the HoL
Representation - The Lords may represent people in society who aren't well represented in public life. The Lords have expertise in many areas of life. The Lords is more politically balanced than the HoC and contains 185 crossbenchers.
Investigates and debates public policy - Select committees in the HoL conduct investigations in policy areas by hearing evidence from a range of people including experts and ministers. In 2016, 41 reports were produced.

Law making - The HoL can defeat legislation by not passing it and sending it back to the HoC. The HoL can strike down secondary legislation.
